Emergency Shut-Off 101: How to Stop a Water Leak While You Wait for the Plumber

By Next Level Plumbing Inc. | Serving Nevada, MO & Emergency Response

It happens in seconds. You are washing dishes, or you flush a toilet, and suddenly water is spraying everywhere. Panic sets in. You scramble for towels, buckets, or duct tape, but the water keeps coming.

Stop. Breathe. Read this.

The single most important thing you can do during a plumbing emergency in your Nevada, MO home is not to call us (do that second), but to stop the flow of water immediately. Knowing how to locate and operate your shut-off valves can save you thousands of dollars in water damage restoration costs.

At Next Level Plumbing Inc., we want to empower you. This guide will walk you through exactly how to kill the water to your house so you can regain control of the situation.

The First Line of Defense: Isolation Valves

If the leak is coming from a specific fixture—like a kitchen sink, a toilet, or a washing machine—you usually don’t need to shut off water to the whole house. You can use the “Isolation Valve.”

Under the Sink & Behind the Toilet

Look underneath the sink or behind the toilet tank. You will see a small silver football-shaped handle (quarter-turn) or a round wheel handle (gate valve) connected to the pipe coming out of the wall.

To Shut Off: Turn the handle clockwise (“Righty-Tighty”) until it stops. If it is a lever, turn it until it is perpendicular (at a right angle) to the pipe.

Warning: If the valve is stuck, DO NOT force it with a wrench. Old valves can snap off, turning a small drip into a massive geyser. If it won’t turn by hand, move to the Main Shut-Off immediately.

The Nuclear Option: The Main Water Shut-Off

If water is pouring through the ceiling, or if the isolation valve is stuck, you need to cut power to the entire house. This is done at the Main Water Shut-Off Valve. Every adult in your home needs to know where this is.

In Vernon County homes, this valve is typically found in one of three places:

1 The Basement / Utility Room

Look for a pipe coming through the foundation wall on the street side of your house. The valve will be located before the water meter (if the meter is inside) or just as the pipe enters the concrete floor.

2 The Crawl Space

If you don’t have a basement, the valve might be just inside the crawl space access door. It will be on the main line rising up into the house.

3 The Yard (Meter Pit)

If you can’t find a valve inside, go to the street. Look for a metal or concrete lid in the grass near the sidewalk. You may need a “Meter Key” (a long T-shaped tool) to turn this valve. Use a wrench to turn the nut on top of the meter until the holes align.

Water is Off. Now What?

Once you have successfully stopped the flow of water, the immediate danger is over. Now, follow these steps to minimize damage while you wait for Next Level Plumbing Inc. to arrive.

1. Open the Faucets

Even though the main is off, there is still water trapped in the pipes upstairs. Open a faucet on the lowest floor of your home (like a basement sink or outdoor spigot) and one on the highest floor. This drains the remaining water out harmlessly instead of it leaking onto your floor.

2. Call the Professionals

Do not try to solder a pipe yourself while the walls are wet. Plumbing requires a dry, clean surface. Call us immediately. We offer emergency service because we know that living without water is not an option.

Pro-Tip: Tag Your Valve Today

Don’t wait for a disaster to find your valve. Go look for it right now.

Once you find it, put a brightly colored tag on it that says “MAIN WATER SHUT-OFF.” Show your spouse, your kids, and your babysitter exactly where it is. In an emergency, seconds count. Fumbling around in a dark basement with a flashlight while water ruins your hardwood floors is a nightmare you can avoid.

If your main valve is old, rusted, or hard to turn, call us to replace it with a modern “ball valve.” Ball valves turn easily with a 90-degree lever motion and are much more reliable than the old “gate valves” found in many Nevada homes.
